Student Food Recipes - Oats

Cheap, Quick, Protein Rich

Welcome to the Oats page. Eat your oats they make you strong!

Renee grew up on a transplanted Irish country farm and she ate oats every day of her life. She's beautiful and smart so I'm sure oats is good food.

According to Renee this is how her Mathair fixed the oats.

Pour the oats into a big glass bowl the night before. You have to use steel cut oats - not rolled. The texture is much different. Lot's of people swear by McCanns, but any steel cut oats are better than rolled.

Cover the oats with water so that if you stuck your finger into the bowl and touched the oats, the water would go up to your second knuckle.

As you become familiar with the oats and how they absorb the water you can adjust the level of water - you may be a one knuckle man, you may be a third knuckle man - depending on how 'runny' you like your oats.

In the morning, Mathair would pour the oats into a kettle and set it on the stove, on a low flame - and proceed to the barn to 'let' the cow. Which means milk the cow btw. By the time the morning chores were out of the way, breakfast was ready.

I just put oats in a crockpot and cook on the lowest setting overnight.
