How to Become a Cardio Sonographer

Sometimes they are called echocardiographers and sometimes they are called cardiac ultrasound technicians but the job is the same and that job is hot and getting hotter.

Cardiovascular sonography technologists start at $36,000 to $45,000. The lowest 10 percent earn $25,510 and the highest 10 percent earn more than $74,760. Median annual wages = $47,010.

Training takes 1 to 4 years depending on program. Most programs take 2 years.

Employment of cardiovascular technologists is expected to increase 24 percent through 2018. (Think aging hearts, think new technologies and new procedures -- think saving peoples lives!)

Cardiovascular sonographers help surgeons perform balloon angioplasty, stent insertion, pacemaker or implantable defibrillator insertions, cardiovascular catheterization and other cardiovascular related procedures. Heart disease continues to plague our modern society and the need for trained cardiovascular specialists is expected to increase well into the future.

What is an RCS?

An RCS is a Registered Cardiac Sonographer. This credential is issued by Cardiovascular Credentialing International, CCI (http://www.cci-online.org) a non-profit organization that gives exams to people who have graduated from a training program or who have been working in the field.

A licensing credential is also issued by The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

Employers want to see the license. You will almost certainly get the job with the credential. It will be impossible to very difficult to enter the field without it.

There are about 34 accredited cardiovascular technology programs in the US.
